There are a number of reasons to love alpaca fibre products - they are soft, warm and luxurious to the touch, as well as light weight and fashionable. There is another factor which makes the fibre all the more appealing to some - its amazing creature of origin. The alpaca has been bred for thousands of years in the Andes region of South America, but keeping them in the United Kingdom has only really taken off over the last decade. The majority of people who keep these intriguing animals do so for their fibre, though there are several other advantages that make alpacas stand out to farmers, smallholders and hobbyists. Loving the cowboy life from the time I can remember, I fell in love with a cowboy who's cowboy life prior to this time, consisted pretty much of owning a horse he shared with his younger brother! Living in the outskirts of the then, not too large, greater Portland area, my cowboy spent time riding his shared horse on his parents land and up the well traveled 92nd Ave. As was typical for the family of the 50's to live on a small acreage, raising a small kitchen garden and hanging their laundry outside on a clothes line, to dry for free in the sun, such was the fair for my cowboy. What with responsibility for planting, weeding, mowing, and haying, one would think there would be little time[..]

Job applicant number one has more than enough experience, the right mix of qualifications, seems to know what's required without even setting foot in the prospective workplace, and to boot, is very highly regarded by his or her very highly respected referees--seems a perfect fit. A good thing! It's like the song that grabs our attention at the start, moves through with great transition to the chorus, which then knocks us off our socks, only then to finish with a crescendo that has our lips whetted for more. We just have to hear it daily or even more often. 'Go you good thing,' is actually a phrase coined from the race track--the horse race track. As[..]

A lot has been written and said about using jockey and trainer combinations or statistics to find good bets. Almost everyone who handicaps horse races knows that there are some teams of jockeys and trainers that win a lot of races, or so it seems. But just how important is that fact when you are handicapping horse races? For instance, let's say you see a great pair like Jose Lezcano and Anthony Dutrow, a jockey trainer combo with a 73% in the money record at Monmouth Park. How big of a factor is that? The question that you really have to ask yourself is this, how much of an impact is that publicly known information having upon the odds? That is what really matters. Many racing programs[..]

We've already covered some of the favourites in the build-up to the 2010 Grand National at Aintree this weekend and we certainly learned last year that you definitely cannot bank on the top contenders when it comes to the drama and excitement of the no holds barred Grand National Festival. First on the list is the talented and in-form Chief Dan George who is priced at around 25/1 with most major bookmakers. You'll find him as high as 33/1. He's looking for his third win on the bounce having scored at Doncaster against a solid field in late February and then nailed a solid win on one of the biggest stages in jumps racing when he took the Grade 3 William Hill Trophy at Cheltenham. "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then is not an act, but a habit." - Aristotle 1. Gain the horse's trust. If your horse does not trust you, he won't really listen to you. 2. Gain the horse's respect. Respect is equally important as trust. If your horse has no respect for you then he won't pay attention to you either. 3. Horses learn on release of pressure. A horse's mind is programmed to always look for an escape. Release of pressure satisfies the horse's deepest psychological need. The need to escape. Trail Riding Part One

A trail ride offers a welcome diversion from long hours in the enclosed environment of a riding arena. Besides being just plain fun and relaxing, a trail ride offers learning opportunities for both horse and rider. It is an indispensable part of any training program. However, there are a lot of things to think about before you actually go on a trail ride. You need to take steps to ensure that both you and your horse are ready. Attempting a trail ride without making proper preparations can turn an enjoyable outing into a nightmare. Many people are confused about the aid for the canter. What follows are some common questions about the canter and my answers. Q. I know to ask for the canter it is outside leg behind the girth and inside leg at the girth, however during the canter is your outside leg supposed to stay back or do both legs then become neutral at the girth once the canter is achieved?" A.Swing your outside leg back ONCE, and then bring it back to its normal position on the girth. Think of it as a spring-loaded action or a windshield-wiper-like action. If you wait for your horse to answer, he's not listening to your leg aid. If he doesn't canter right away, give him a little bump with your outside leg or[..]

The western saddle has an interesting history and development. While it is now considered a uniquely American style, its origins can actually be traced back to the Moorish horsemen and warriors of the Dark Ages. When the Moors invaded Spain in the 700's, they brought with them their unique style of riding and tack. Their saddles were designed for battle, with high cantles and forks for protection and security, and longer stirrups to accommodate riding with armor. This was the saddle of the knights and the crusades. The Spaniards adapted this saddle into what became known as the Spanish War Saddle. This was the saddle they brought with them to the New World. As their goals in this new[..]

We've all had the experience of picking a horse to win but getting such lousy odds on it that we pass it by, figuring it is not a value bet. Then, when the horse wins, it hurts to know that we passed up cashing, even though we realize that we must stick to value bets or eventually lose our bankroll. I will always advocate insisting on value in a bet. Indeed, I'll go one step farther. The art of making profits on horse races is the art of handicapping combined with the business of identifying value in wagers. Without finding value, you are only solving half the puzzle.
